The Annual Terence MacSwiney Weekend

TERENCE MACSWINEY WEEKEND 2018

Dates 19TH October -21st October

 

Schedule

Friday 19th October

7.30 p.m: Opening of the Terence MacSwiney weekend in Kilmurry Church. Keynote speech is to be given by Cathal Brugha.  Cathal will be introduced on the night by Dr. John O’Mahony S.C. who is M.C. for the evening.

 

9.00 p.m.:  Drinks reception in the museum

 

Saturday 20th October

9.30 a.m. : Museum will open and there will be teas and coffees served as people arrive for the day’s events.

11 a.m.:  Lecture being given by Gabriel Doherty. The title is “The look of the Conqueror”. It will be a 40/45 min lecture with 15 minutes for Q and A afterwards.

12.15 a.m:  The poetry of Terence MacSwiney.  This will be a 40 minute event at which Cathal Brugha and his wife Catherine will read his poetry.  Mary Breen of  U.C.C.  will explain the context and verse.  John Fitzgerald will also have a poem specially commissioned for this event which will be unveiled on the day.

1.00 P.M

Light lunch provided.

 

2.00 p.m.

Tour of  MacSwiney locations in the area.  There is to be a talk at Clodagh Castle by Michael Galvin on the MacSwineys. We will visit the house in the village where Terence MacSwineys grandparents lived along with the old graveyard where his ancestors are buried.

4.00 p.m.

Museum for teas and coffees. The museum will  be open .

 

SUNDAY 21st October

 

10 a.m. Peadar O’Riada has commissioned a musical piece for the Mass which will commemorate Terence MacSwiney. This mass will be said by the Monsignor O’Callaghan and will be celebrated in Irish

11.30 a.m.

Museum will open for people to view the exhibit and there will be teas and coffees. Deirdre as chairperson of the event will give the closing speech for the inaugural Terence MacSwiney Weekend.
