Stone, Sand and Gravel Exhibition
Independence Museum Kilmurry will present a temporary exhibition on the history of the Stone Sand & Gravel Industry in the Bride Valley during the month of October. It will be officially opened on Saturday 7th October at 2.30 pm by Mr. Richard Wood, former Chairman of John A Wood Ltd and will include many photos and items from Richard’s own collection. The exhibition will feature Castlemore Quarries, Finbarr O’Neill Ltd., William Ellis & Son Ltd and Jerh O’Regan & Son. Among the items to be seen will be a Liner hand operated block machine and other artefacts from this important industry which continues to this day. There will also be many photographs of the people who worked in these firms and a number of these former employees will be available to speak of their working lives during a time of great change. Previous exhibitions on Howard’s Bellmount Mills in 2015 and The Local Creameries in 2016 proved very popular and we are confident this will be as well received. Everyone is welcome to the official opening on Saturday 7th and the temporary exhibition will be on view each Sunday in October from 2 pm to 5 pm. The image is of the John A Wood block yard at Classis Ovens in 1934.
