Welcome to our Lectures and Field trips page. During the Spring and Autumn we have a lecture series which we hold in the community room in the Independence Museum Kilmurry, County Cork. In the summertime we hold a number of field trips. These consist of trips around the County of Cork or sometimes further afield. For the full list of lectures and field trips up to and including April 2018 please look below. Some lectures are still to be confirmed but in the event of that particular lecture not going ahead we will have a replacement lecture ready. We will update this page with any changes as soon as we have them. 24th May 2017 Start Time: 8 pm Lecture Title: Female Transportation from Mid-Cork to Australia. Talk given by John O’Connell 25th June 2017 Start Time: 11 am Field trip to Moviddy Graveyard in Crookstown. Guide: Sile Healy This is a must see for anyone interested in the final resting places of some of the landed gentry of the area. 23rd July 2017 Start Time: 11 am Field Trip to the Famine Village in Gurranreigh Kilmichael. Guides: Michael Galvin This is a must see for anyone interested in the famine era and the loss and destruction of the local population during this time. We will now not be visiting Clearagh. August 19th 2017 Bus Tour- Hidden Gems in Kilmurry parish. During Heritage week why not join us on a tour of the parish. We will be visiting historic locations that are not open to the public. To book for this tour please contact the museum. September 10th 2017 Start Time: 2pm Field Trip to Cnoc an Tobair. Guide: Bridget Goulding Join us for a walk to Cnoc an Tobair the site of a holy well in Kilmurry. We will be meeting at the museum beforehand. This event is weather permitting. Please check with the museum on the 9th of September for confirmation of this field trip. September 13th 2017 Start Time: 8pm Lecture Title: The 80 Club and Kidnapping in Kilmurry- The Kilbonane Connection. Talk given by Sile Healy September 24th 2017 Start Time: 11 am sharp outside Cloughduv church. Field Trip to Garranes Ringfort-Results of Recent Excavations Guide: Professor Billy O’Brien October 17 2017 Start time: 8 pm Lecture Title: Seeds of Revolution in Kilmurry and Mid-Cork 1916-1917. Talk given by Niall Murray Niall Murray has researched extensively on this subject and has written a thesis on the period so this should be a very informative and entertaining evening on the local area and it’s role in the lead up to the War of Independence. November 22nd 2017 Start Time: 8 pm Lecture Title: Significant Local Archaeology- Rock Art in Clearagh. Talk given by John Sheehan January 2018 Date T.B.A. Lecture Title: Behind the Wall: The rise and fall of Protestant power and Culture in Bandon. Talk given by Kieran Doyle This talk promises to be a very entertaining and informative night. Some of the landlords of the parish of Kilmurry hailed from Bandon or had connections to the town. February 2018 Date T.B.A. Kenneth Nichols- Kenneth will speak on a topic yet to be decided. March 2018 Date T.B.A. Lecture Title: The Irish Gunpowder Story in Ballincollig and Link to Fort Camden. Talk given by Pat Flynn Ballincollig once housed one of the biggest Gunpowder mills in the whole of the British Empire. Why not come along and learn how vital Ballincollig was to the British army and it’s links to Fort Camden. April 2018 Date T.B.A. Lecture Title: Irish Revolution. Talk given by Pádraig Óg Ó Ruairc April 18th Cork Historical & Archaeological Society Annual County Lecture hosted by KHAA at Independence Museum Kilmurry Speaker and title to be confirmed.
